    What is the cheapest way to build a shed?

    If you’re on a budget and looking to build a shed in Canberra, taking on some of the work yourself can help cut costs. However, it’s important to do your research and become familiar with building codes and council requirements. You’ll also need to work with a shed supplier to create a pre-engineered kit that’s designed to withstand the wind speed of the site.

    Here’s a list of items to consider when building on a budget.

    • obtain your own building approval,
    • use a pre-engineered shed kit that does not require too much customisation.
    • work to standard sizes that are optimized for economical engineering design.
    • use roller doors that are less than or equal to 3m wide x 3m high.
    • do all of the construction work yourself under an owner builders’ licence.

    What is the largest shed without council approval?

    Outbuilding, such as; Sheds, Garages, carports & studios can be exempt from development approval if it meets specific criteria, such as size and location.

    The outbuilding is exempt from building approval if it meets the relevant provisions of the Building (General) Regulation 2008, Schedule 1.

    • it is a class 10a building (i.e. garage, outbuilding or enclosed outbuilding) as identified in the exempt building code
    • it complies with the building code
    • the height is not more than 3m
    • the roof or roof has a maximum plan area of 25m²
    • if it has a floor, the floor level is not more than 1m above ground and the floor area is not more than 36m² (excluding areas underneath external walls)
    • the steel element of roof framing for the structure has a maximum cross-sectional thickness of 4mm
    • no masonry, clay or concrete component of the structure (other than cement sheet product) is more than 1.8m above ground
    • it complies with the exempt building code.

    Can you build your own carport?

    Yes, you can definitely build something yourself. However, you’ll need to get an owner builder license first and provide the license number to the council when you apply for building approval. Many of our customers are DIY enthusiasts who enjoy taking on challenges and saving on installation costs.
