Very happy with our carport purchased from Modern Steel Buildings. Brett was very helpful in the design stage and provided lots of great advice and support. The carport was delivered and looks great. We had some minor issues with damaged panels on supply, but Brett spoke with the local supplier and the items were replaced at no cost within a few days. Excellent carport. Really shows off the driveway and unit as well as being good protection for the car from the sun. With mine I ordered it a bit longer so I can get my trailer in front of the car so everything looks tidy from the street. Brett was always there if you needed any information at all. Wasn't too long after ordering it that the carport was delivered to my address and may I say well packed and secured with no damage. Would recommend this company. Do I need planning permission to build a carport, shed or patio in Canberra & ACT?

Generally, most carport, shed and patio developments in Canberra and the ACT need approval before work can begin. Sometimes, a project may be exempt and not need development application (DA) approval if it meets certain criteria.

You can self-check whether you’re exempt before submitting a DA. There is also a checklist you can use to determine whether a development has been approved. If you are unsure, it is a good idea to contact the council directly or a private building certifier.

Outbuildings, such as sheds, garages, carports, and studios, can be exempt from development approval if they meet specific criteria, such as size and location.

The outbuilding is exempt from building approval if it meets the relevant Building (General) Regulation 2008 provisions, Schedule 1.

• it is a class 10a building (i.e. garage, outbuilding or enclosed outbuilding) as identified in the exempt building code
• it complies with the building code
• the height is not more than 3m
• the roof or roof has a maximum plan area of 25m²
• if it has a floor, the floor level is not more than 1m above ground and the floor area is not more than 36m² (excluding areas underneath external walls)
• the steel element of roof framing for the structure has a maximum cross-sectional thickness of 4mm
• no masonry, clay or concrete component of the structure (other than cement sheet product) is more than 1.8m above ground
• it complies with the exempt building code.
