Can you live in a barn-style shed?

The barn shed is a common and very popular design that can be modified and engineered to become a livable space. In order to do this, it must be designed to meet Class 1a standards, which means it needs to be suitable for living. This requires the building to be heavily braced and may involve upgrading steel member sizes.

The concrete slab design will also need to change from a standard portal frame style to a house slab design, requiring a concrete edge beam around the slab perimeter. Converting this design into a livable shed is popular for several reasons. One reason is that it allows for the installation of internal columns, facilitating the construction of internal walls and separate rooms. Additionally, raising the centre section enables the utilization of a mezzanine floor for upstairs living, often extending out onto a balcony or patio area.

Can you customise the sizes of a barn?

Yes, you can customise the barn shed to any configuration you would like, but all within reason, ensuring the customisations meet engineering approval. You can customise the internal bay sizes, increase or reduce the height of the side lean-to roof sections, raise the centre section and add a mezzanine floor, remove walls, and install doors and openings where required.
