Compatibility

It is crucial to check the compatibility of building products with adjacent materials. These checks should account for both direct contact between materials and the flow of water from one material to another.

To avoid material incompatibility, it is generally recommended to follow these guidelines:

  • For zinc-aluminum alloy coated steel, color-coated steel, and galvanized steel cladding, avoid using copper, lead, green or treated timber, stainless steel, and mortar or concrete.
  • Galvanized steel sheets should not receive drainage from aluminum or any inert materials, such as plastics, glass, glazed tiles, color-coated and zinc-aluminum alloy.

Handling & Storage

It is crucial to handle all steel roofing and walling products with care to maintain their quality and capabilities. When on-site, packs should be kept dry and stored above ground level at all times. If the products become wet, it is necessary to separate them, wipe them down, and leave them in the open air to dry.

It is important to note that direct contact with corrosive soil may cause product corrosion and void any warranties. Therefore, it is vital to keep the materials dry and covered before installation.

Product Testing

We subject our products to testing and observation by independent organizations to ensure their quality. Some of these organizations include;

  • the University of Technology, Sydney,
  • Cyclone Testing Station at James Cook University,
  • the University of Sydney, and
  • CSIRO.

Our ongoing research and development activities help us maintain our position as innovators in design and consumer information.

Cutting

When it comes to cutting metal roofing and wall cladding, it’s important to use the right tools and techniques to avoid damage and ensure safety. A power saw with a cold cut saw blade or a power nibbler, as well as hand-held tin snips, are recommended for cutting where needed. It’s crucial to avoid using an angle grinder or any cutting method that generates heat, and instead opt for cold cutting techniques. Abrasive discs can also cause damage, so it’s best to avoid using them. Lastly, always dispose of any off-cuts responsibly to minimize any potential hazards.

Care & Maintenance

Here are some useful tips to ensure that you can enjoy your COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® products for a long time:

  • In areas with low rainfall, it is important to clean your products frequently.
  • Avoid using brick cleaning acid on steel fascia, guttering, or roofing and walling.
  • Never bury these products in sand, soil, or concrete.
  • Do not use touch-up spray paint on COLORBOND® steel.
  • Remove any metal debris during cutting or drilling to avoid damage.
  • Keep the bundled material dry before installation.
  • If you have prepainted metal roofing components, store them in the shade. The protective plastic film can be hard to remove if it is exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Ensure that materials made of different metals, such as copper and lead, do not come into contact with these products and that water does not run from one to the other.
  • Make sure that your roofing and guttering are free from dirt and leaves and have proper drainage.
